Meatpacking District Design '09
Meatpacking District presents 40 design and architecture events during ICFF - the 4th annual off-sight series takes over the neighborhood.
From May 14 - 17, 2009 The Meatpacking District hosted the Fourth Annual Design 09, a series of exhibitions, product launches, panel discussions, and architectural presentations culminating in a district-wide open house on Sunday May 17th from 4:00-7:00pm. The theme for Design 09 was ARCHITECTURE, which explored the physical growth of the area with work from: Polshek Partnership Architects, LOT-EK, Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Balmori Associate, James Carpenter, the Industrial Designers Society of America, designboom, and New Finnish Design.
Design 09 coincided with the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) on May 15-18, 2009.
"The City has become far more vibrant design destination since Mayor Bloomberg declared New York Design Week four years ago," said Abe Gurko producer of Design 09, who has lead off-site design culture in the city for the past sven years. Design 09 is a collaboration with the Meatpacking District Initiative. "Our neighborhood is the perfect place to stage alternative design events since so many incredible architectural and retail design projects are constantly underway here," says Annie Washburn, Executive Director.
Highlights of Design 09 included:
An event kickoff 5/14 at The Standard Hotel with a discussion between hotel owner Andre Balaz and Julie Lovine of Architects Newspaper.
On view at Diane von Furstenberg - the architectural model for the planned Whitney Museum of American Art on Gansevoort Street designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop.
The 414 Gallery at 414 West 14th Street - Featuring a collective of international designers and world-renowned architects including designboom, IDSA, IDEA Brazil, Iceland Design Center, FIT, Polshek Partners, Lo-Tek and ICrave and CLI Group.
A construction tour of the High Line Building 450 West 14th Street followed by a talk with distinguished building architect Morris Adjmi.
PLAYFUL New Finnish Design installed in the Gansevoort Plaza featuring free programming throughout the weekend.
Bond.BeLowTech at Milk Gallery, Vitra presents an exhibition by Parsons the New School, Classon Koivisto Rune Illuminated at Design Within Reach.
The Outdoor Royal Botania Street Lounge at Spice Market Square, on 9th Avenue and 13th Street.
A district-wide open house and complimentary happy hour on Sunday, May 17 from 4pm to 7pm in more than 25 venues.
Closing party at The 414 Gallery serving Blue Moon and products from Southern Wine and Spirits.
