
From May 14 - 17, 2009 The Meatpacking District hosted the Fourth Annual Design 09, a series of exhibitions, product launches, panel discussions, and architectural presentations culminating in a district-wide open house on Sunday May 17th from 4:00-7:00pm. The theme for Design 09 was ARCHITECTURE, which explored the physical growth of the area with work from: Polshek Partnership Architects, LOT-EK, Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Balmori Associate, James Carpenter, the Industrial Designers Society of America, designboom, and New Finnish Design.
Design 09 coincided with the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) on May 15-18, 2009.
"The City has become far more vibrant design destination since Mayor Bloomberg declared New York Design Week four years ago," said Abe Gurko producer of Design 09, who has lead off-site design culture in the city for the past sven years. Design 09 is a collaboration with the Meatpacking District Initiative. "Our neighborhood is the perfect place to stage alternative design events since so many incredible architectural and retail design projects are constantly underway here," says Annie Washburn, Executive Director.
