Our New Public Plazas

The MPIA and the NYC DOT have been working together to renovate the public plazas in the Meatpacking District along Ninth Avenue, and the changes are now beginning to take place. Last week, new planters were placed and planted, and the old bollards and concrete blocks that previously delineated our public plazas were removed. In the upcoming two months, the Meatpacking District will see new bollards outlining these plazas, as well as chairs, tables and umbrellas placed inside of them for the public to enjoy. The trash cans along Ninth Avenue between Gansevoort and 14th Streets will also be replaced with special cans, just for this district.

Check out the new plantings now in place in the Meatpacking District and keep an eye open for the rest of the changes taking place soon!

Good Food Festival - October 9th

The Good Food Festival, presented by Basis Foods in association with the MPIA, returns for its second year this weekend! This annual event showcases good food that is traditional, locally-sourced and 100% traceable from over 50 of New York's finest chefs, restaurants, artisans and farms.

Good Food Festival features restaurant and chef tastings from over 20 of New York's brightest chefs and restaurants including Gramercy Tavern, Perry St, Pastis, Marc Forgione, Dell'anima, BLT Bar & Grill and Van Leeuwen. New this year, will be the Good Food for Kids family programming, including butter and pickle making, summer roll lessons, and more.

The event is free to attend. Tickets are required to sample tastings from participating chefs and restaurants, and are now available for purchase online at goodfoodfest.com.

The Ground Zero Museum Workshop

As the tenth anniversary of 9/11 approaches, along with the opening of the 9/11 memorial at the World Trade Center, interest is building for the Ground Zero Museum Workshop, which has been open for 6 years in the Meatpacking District. The Ground Zero Museum Workshop is a small museum on 14th Street in the MPD full of photographs and memorabilia from 9/11 and the World Trade Center, curated and provided by Gary Marlon Suson, who was one of the official photographers for Ground Zero. Ascension at Gansevoort Plaza

The Whitney Museum of American Art is celebrating its move to the Meatpacking District with a series of installation and exhibits in the neighborhood, called "Whitney on Site: New Commissions Downtown". This week, an installation and performance titled "Ascension" will debut in Gansevoort Plaza from Thursday July 7th to Saturday July 9th.

Ascension is a choreographed dance performance centered around a twenty one foot rotating ladder. Elizabeth Streb choreographed the performance, which will be performed by 9 dancers from her STREB Extreme Action Company.

Gansevoort Plaza is located at 9th Avenue and Little West 12th Street, and performances will occur at 3pm and 5pm this Thursday through Saturday. Check out the Whitney Museum's website here for more details about the performance.

The High Line Porch

Check out "The Porch" on the High Line park, which opened today where the elevated railroad park intersects Chelsea Market at around 15th Street. The Porch is a small 40 seat cafe, serving farm fresh and locally sourced light food, snacks, beer and wine. Yesterday, "Make Music NY" sponsored over 100 different pop-up musical performances throughout NYC, all day long. From pianos left of the street for anyone to play, to two quintets of instruments playing from the outdoor balconies of the NY Stock Exchange, the city was fully of music. Major congratulations to the Dream Downtown Hotel on their soft opening this past Wednesday. The hotel, whose entrance is located on 16th Street off of 9th Avenue, kicked off its soft opening period with a series of high profile private events, showcasing its bars, pool and lobby. The Dream Downtown is made up to two towers of rooms, one on 16th Street and one on 17th Street, with a partially glass bottomed pool in the courtyard between the towers, sitting above the lobby. The hotel has also opened with a top floor lounge and roof deck, offering stunning views and a prime vantage point of Empire State Building. High Line Section 2 Now Open!

Congratulations to Friends of the High Line, who opened the second section of the elevated High Line park yesterday, June 7th. The ribbon cutting ceremony included Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Speaker Christine Quinn, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, Congressman Jerrold Nadler, the Meatpacking District's Diane von Furstenberg and High Line co-founders Joshua David and Robert Hammond. The High Line park now stretches from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to 30th Street in the Hudson Yards area.

The second section of the High Line park adds 4 access points, on-site artwork, new lookout points, seating areas, the "great lawn", new food vendors, and more. Additionally, at the end of the High Line is the "Rainbow City" art installation presented by AOl, which was featured last December at Miami Art Basel. Additionally, down the steps from the High Line on 30th Street is the new parking lot beer garden from Tom Colicchio, called "The Lot on Tap", set to open today June 8th and close on September 30th.

Congratulations to the Whitney Museum of American Art, for breaking ground this past Tuesday on the Gansevoort Street site of their new Museum, set to open in 2015. The Groundbreaking ceremony took place in a tent on the lot of which their new building will be built, and was attended by Mayor Bloomberg and the new building's architect Renzo Piano, along with many of the museums donors, including NYC socialites, celebrities, and art collectors. The ceremony concluded with a live art piece by the Elizabeth Streb dance company, which dumped dirt onto Elizabeth Streb, into which Mayor Bloomberg and museum's director dug shovels and posed for the classic groundbreaking photos. Tommy Hilfiger is launching Prep World, a Spring/Summer 2011 limited edition capsule collection of sixty pieces for men and women. The collection will be housed in a first-of-its-kind Pop-Up house, which will travel to key cities around the globe this summer. Hilfiger invited renowned prep expert Lisa Birnbach, author of The Official Preppy Handbook and True Prep: It's a Whole New Old World, to join him in the launch of Prep World around the globe.

DvF Awarded for Revitalization of the MPD

Last Thursday night, Diane von Furstenberg was awarded the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Medal by the Municipal Art Society of New York for her part in the revitalization of the Meatpacking District. As the owner of prime real estate in the Meatpacking District that houses her flagship store and company headquarters, Diane has done a tremendous job preserving her buildings in the neighborhood as well as influencing others to treat neighborhood property similarly. Eater.com has interviewed meat purveyors Marc Sarrazin and George Faison for Eater's 2011 Burger Week. Marc and George are both co-owners of Debragga & Spitler, an artisanal butcher and meat purveyor in the Meatpacking District. As one of the few meatpacking companies left in the MPD, Debragga provides meat to many of NYC's well known restaurants, including nearby Colicchio & Son's. Over the past two months, the club has been refurbished with new designs and lighting by Meatpacking District design firm ICRAVE. In total, the facelift cost EMM Group $400,000 and will be unveiled tonight for the beginning of a 3 day celebration, ending with a performance by rapper Fabolous on Saturday night. Charles Nolan, fashion designer and political activist, passed away Sunday January 30th, 2011.
The Meatpacking District sends condolences to his family and friends. Charles Nolan was a well respected designer, who helped turn around Ellen Tracy in the 90's and Anne Klein beginning in 2001. Ice Skating at The Standard

This past weekend, The Standard, New York softly opened the Meatpacking District's first ever ice skating rink!

Located in front of the hotel, the 3,000 square foot ice rink is open to the public 7 days a week, from 10am to midnight. The rink will be open all Winter long and features 3 types of skates to rent, as well as an "Après Skate" menu featuring hot chocolate with marshmallows, apple cider and cheese fondue.

Tickets are $12, and skate rentals are $3.

High Line Facility

The High Line park has gotten approval to build a new "Maintenance and Operations" building, at Gansevoort and Washington Streets. This 4 story building will be built next to the High Line, and connecting with it to allow maintenance vehicles to access the above ground park. The building will also be next to the soon-to-come downtown Whitney Museum, and has been designed to compliment the museum. The building will include an elevator up to the High Line, as well as public restrooms, and facilities to help High Line staff easily service and maintain the park. The Darby, a new "Supper Club" on 14th Street in the space previously occupied by Nell's and The Plumm has recently opened. This lavish space is red and gold everywhere, and features a partially open kitchen and a stage for their house band. The City of New York has partnered with American Express to start "Small Business Saturday". Everyone knows thanksgiving weekend has "Black Friday" and "Cyber Monday", so American Express is going to help smaller shops, stores and restaurants attract customers on a day of their own.

Smaller shops cannot offer the huge discounts seen on Black Friday, but they can offer their own types of incentives, and American Express is pledging to provide $100 in Facebook advertising to 10,000 small business owners.

On Tuesday, The NY Times covered how the High Line has inspired development along its stretch of Western land, from Gansevoort to 33rd Streets. While the recession delayed and caused problems for some developments, there has been a good amount of construction starting and resuming recently, as well as land changing hands. Look forward to some great new commercial buildings along the High Line below 14th Street, and lots of new options for housing above 14th Street. Check out the article here.

Last night, The Standard, New York and the MPDI hosted a cocktail party for all the great people that work in the neighborhood. The event took place at Le Bain, on the roof of the hotel. We were surrounded by amazing views, the sunset, and everyone from the neighborhood that makes the Meatpacking District such a great place to work and play. Le Bain is the perfect place to have in the neighborhood to relax after work and enjoy the sunset; we can't wait to go back.

Villa Pacri is about to re-establish Gansevoort Street, opening in the space that previously housed Merkato 55 initially with their ground floor cafe La Gazzetta. The name Villa Pacri comes from the "Villa" inspiration for this concept, which will be a multi (4) level space, each offering a different dinning experience and unique atmosphere; while all tying into a authentic, neighborhood Italian hospitality theme.

Opening July 1st is La Gazzetta, which is the ground floor cafe, with a take-out section of Villa Pacri. La Gazzetta will offer a casual cafe dining experience, with regional ingredients and a neighborly feel. The take-out section will offer coffee, pastries, sandwiches, as well as fine imported Italian products including cured meats, pastas, olive oil, and more. There will also be outdoor seating for warm weather.

The kitchen of Villa Pacri will be led by Executive Chef Michael Berardino, previously Chef de Cuisine of 2 years at Dell' Anima. The interior is done by award-winning French architect Cyril Durand Behar, and La Gazzetta features an amazing centerpiece chandelier composed of 300 wine glasses.

The NY Times has been given a thorough update on the design of the new Whitney Museum, to be built on Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District. In hard times for fundraising, the Whitney currently has an advantage with low building costs, and is rushing forward in their process to build the new museum. Renzo Piano, the architect of the new museum is altering the design of the building to cut costs, while trying to meet immense expectations left from the Whitney's original Madison Avenue building's design.

Yesterday it was announced that Sephora has signed a lease for a new store in the Meatpacking District, at 21-27 Ninth Avenue. The store will be positioned across the street from the Hotel Gansevoort as well as Spice Market, and Sephora is planning for this to be a more luxurious version of the fragrance and makeup store, with a new format and longer hours. Announced last month on the 25th, The Whitney Museum of American Art has agreed to start construction on their new museum to be built on Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District. A little MPD history for a change- a couple months ago, Core77 posted this short article on why there are so many cobble stones in New York.

And everyone knows, the Meatpacking District has no shortage of cobblestones. In the 1600-1800's, America was sending lots of resources and goods to Europe on ships that were leaving New York harbors, while Europe wasn't sending anything back. The boats had to be weighted down, so they sent heavy and easy to produce cobblestones on the trips back to America. And today, you can still see the streets of the MPD, Tribeca, and other neighborhoods lined with these old stones.

The Whitney Fence

Starting next month, The Whitney Museum will start a 3 part outdoor exhibit covering a fence around the lot of land that their future museum is poised to be built, and on the trailers and machinery within it. The site of the exhibit is currently being used by the High Line park as their maintenance facility. The exhibits are by 2 individual artists and one collective of two painters, and each one is in collaboration with a different Whitney curator. Check out the NYTimes article here.

The Collective, a really interesting new restaurant replacing One Little West 12th, is set to open this Wednesday, the 17th. The space has been renovated by the One Group, and the concept of the space is "old and new come together to create 4 or 5 different active living/ dining room spaces within the restaurant". The restaurant was designed by our neighbors ICRAVE and is furnished with all sorts of different objects and furniture that have been recycled and refurbished as new and different pieces. Pierre Supreme has just opened this very cool new house-wares and accessories store, fittingly named "La Maison Supreme". We stopped in a week ago to check it out-- tons of soaps, cool frames, bedding, dishes, and more. The concept of the store is influenced from his studies, travels, and his Aunt's parfumerie and fathers' antique store he spent time in as a child. Dickson's Farmstand Meats opened this winter in Chelsea Market as a boutique, locally sourced butcher shop, and has not disappointed one bit. My dad buys whole chickens there, they make amazing dinners.

We all know that Milk Studios did an amazing job with their 32 shows this season, but equally inspiring is what they did to feed all those editors, celebs, and designers in the building all week. Milk imported Montauk's Surf Lodge to their 8th floor, which included Surf Lodge's Sam Talbot in the kitchen, and a bar stocked with Belvedere and Cafe Bustelo coffee.
