As part of the Gansevoort Street and Ninth Avenue reconstruction, the contractor needs a shipping container for storage. The home for this container, as some of you may have noticed, is in the plaza on Ninth Avenue and West 13th Street.
MPIA has plans to use the structure as a canvas for our rebranding and public art projects. Once clad in creativity that reflects the Meatpacking District, the shipping container will be a trending topic, we’re sure.
You may have noticed that tables, chairs, and umbrellas were removed from Dos Caminos this morning. They are being temporarily relocated so a test pit can be dug.
We hope to have the tables back for you to lunch at again by the end of the week.
Independence Day: a celebration with burgers, beer, and reveling in the joy of American freedom, all thanks to the Declaration of Independence. But before you rush off east or south for the weekend, here are a few things to know about the Ninth Avenue reconstruction.
Test pits are being dug throughout the intersection of 14th Street and Ninth Avenue. All the brightly painted lines are telling the contractor where and where not to dig, for now. They’re doing this work to see what’s below and determine how easy – or difficult – it will be to drop catch basins, replace water mains, and rebuild the street bed.
We were sad to see Gaslight Plaza go, but it’s for the good of the project and safety of the community. Eventually, homes for all of the large planters in the plazas will have to be found on sidewalks big enough to accommodate them. A big thanks to Soho House and Meilman Family Real Estate for adopting the planters from Gaslight Plaza. We think they look great!
Now that you’re in the know, you’re free to check out and enjoy the 4th of July!
Wrenches have been thrown from left and right to slow the start of this construction project. But we have now been assured that on Thursday, June 25, saw cutting of the pavement will begin, and by Monday, excavation will be in full effect.
The new news is the location: they will begin on the east side of Ninth Avenue and Hudson Street on 14th Street. We unfortunately are still going to lose the public plaza in front of Gaslight Lounge. That is set to disappear on Friday, so stop by for lunch there tomorrow and if you’re feeling it, buy a pair of sunglasses from the nice lady on the street.
Also, as posted below, we have learned that they will be using the cub land on the south side of 14th Street for some storage and transfers of equipment.
