Construction Updates - April 22, 2015
Ninth Avenue Meatpacking District Reconstruction Project
Beginning this spring, the city’s Department of Design & Construction (DDC) will begin reconstructing Ninth Avenue from 16th Street to Gansevoort Street. This project is funded with federal, state, and city dollars. New water/sewer mains, storm drains and catch basins will be installed to improve the neighborhood’s drainage problem. Ninth Avenue will be redesigned to improve pedestrian and vehicular traffic flow, reset the cobblestones and create beautiful and permanent public spaces.
The project is expected to take three years and will be completed in phases. The first phase will begin on Ninth Avenue from 14th Street to 16th Street. Construction hours will be from 7am to 4pm daily; there will be periodic water shut-offs for the neighborhoods.
MPIA and CIC are working closely with the city to prepare for how construction will affect the neighborhood and to see if alternate work times can be provided to respect the 24 hour nature of our community. Our plan will make sure that the stakeholders of the Meatpacking District are well informed and supported during the construction period.
