While the MPIA helps to manage the plazas and the programming schedule, the permitting of public spaces is under the full jurisdiction of the NYC Mayor’s Office of Street Activity Permits. The MPIA will make every effort to ensure quality public programming partners that respect the diverse nature of the district.

9th Avenue Public Plazas

Public Events & Programming

The Ninth Avenue Plazas were redesigned in 2010 for improved public usage, and the MPIA encourages community interaction and utilization of the spaces.

These plazas are programmed with events and activities; Public and community events by the MPIA, commercial events through the Mayor's Office of Street Activity Permits (SAPO) and film and TV shoots by the Mayors Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting. Through a partnership with the city, the MPIA maintains and manages these spaces year-round on behalf of NYC DOT running a sanitation and beautification program. As the community partner of the NYC DOT, the MPIA facilitates programming for use by the public for cultural and community activities throughout the year. The provision and consumption of alcohol is not permitted within the public plazas.

If you are interested in hosting an event in one of the area's public spaces, please contact SAPO and download the MPIA Plaza Guide, or call the MPIA at 212.633.0185. We can answer any questions you may have and put you in touch with the appropriate people to speak with at SAPO.
