OPENING OF ZERZURA
October 16, 2015
Over the summer, Gansevoort Hotel Group launched Zerzura, a North African-inspired rooftop lounge, at its flagship Meatpacking location in New York City. Named after the mythical oasis located deep in the desert, Zerzura temporarily replaces Plunge Bar + Lounge, offering an escape for hotel guests and downtown locals alike to take in the 360-degree view of the Manhattan skyline and the Hudson River. Zerzura will serve up innovative, refreshing cocktails paired with light Mediterranean fare by China Grill Management.
In collaboration with ThinThread, a new creative team based in New York City, Gansevoort formulated a fresh rooftop concept complete with a secret outdoor garden, an indoor bohemian-style sanctuary with hand-made tapestries imported from Marrakech, draped ceiling fabrics and natural elements. ThinThread is comprised of Eamon Kelly (formerly of Up & Down, Bow and Red Egg) and his partner, Cutter LaKind, who were tapped to reimagine the iconic rooftop. Upon entry, custom collage-style wallpaper designed by Eve Vogelein welcomes guests into the retreat, while a desert-scene mural above the main bar by artist Clinton Bopp further transports guests to the desert haven. Moving away from the space’s urban roots, the sky-high refuge is complemented by authentic Moroccan lamps, leafy papyrus plants and bold fabrics, providing pops of light and color to this warm hidden getaway.
