9th Avenue Construction Begins
September 3, 2015
Earlier this year, the city kicked off the Meatpacking District Ninth Avenue Reconstruction Project.
The project is a comprehensive, curb to curb re-design and re-building of Ninth Avenue from Gansevoort Street To West 16th Street. The project is being funded with federal, state, and city dollars. New water and sewer mains, storm drains, and catch basins will be installed to improve the neighborhood’s drainage problem.
Ninth Avenue will be redesigned to improve pedestrian and vehicular traffic flow, create beautiful and permanent public spaces, and reset the historic cobblestones. The project could take up to three years to complete and will be done in phases. Construction hours are generally 7am – 3:30pm. However, there may be times construction is done later into the evening or even overnight, to expedite the work. It is anticipated that there will be headaches for the neighborhood throughout the process. The Meatpacking BID is working closely with the Departments of Design and Construction, Transportation, and the mayor’s office to anticipate and mitigate issues.
As issues arise, efforts will be taken to ensure that information is shared in real time if it’s going to affect your business, building, or block. And if you have a question or concern, mechanisms have bee set in order to get answers as quickly as possible.

One of the great parts about this neighborhood is its endless ability to evolve and make the best out of anything that comes along. When this project is complete, the streetscape will exude the same chic contrasts of the District, entirely new, but still original in its own right.
