BEHIND NESH NYC, THE SWEAT SESSIONS OUTFITTERS FOR AUGUST
August 10, 2017
For the month of August, Nesh NYC is outfitting instructors and the Meatpacking team at Sweat Sessions, an free outdoor fitness series every Tuesday evening this summer. Designed in mind to easily transition from working out to going out, NESH is the perfect gear for women always on the go. We sat down with Bree Chambers, the owner of NESH NYC to get to know the brand.
How did Nesh get started?
Nesh NYC was conceived during my yoga teacher training at Laughing Lotus 6 years ago. The idea came due to the fact that I was a new mother and clothing designer and I found myself with nothing to wear to my yoga teacher training. I still wanted to feel chic and sophisticated but needed the functionality of activewear. NESH NYC was a combination of my love for yoga and design.
What does NESH stand for?
Nesh is a shortened version of Ganesha, a Hindu God and the remover of all obstacles. During my yoga teacher training there was a graffiti mural of a Ganesha riding a skate board!
A NESH NYC woman is a lifestyle philosophy, not an age or demographic. Our women care about her clothing being made in the USA and appreciates the super soft and luxe fabrications. She is also always on the go and wellness plays a part in her lifestyle.
Why was it important to you to have the clothing made in the US?
In 2008 while working as a design director in the industry, I witnessed many people losing their jobs to China. Pattern-makers, sewers, cutters and drapers in the US were all losing their jobs. At NESH NYC we really believe that these jobs are a form of art and can not be entirely lost. We will do our best to keep as many of these trade jobs here as possible.
You started this company as a mother of two. What’s your message to other moms? It can be very overwhelming as a new mother, but it is possible to still follow your dreams and go for it! You will be a better mother and your children will appreciate and value what you do.
We love being in the Meatpacking District. It has such a chill vibe and is filled with creatives and tourists. My favorite work out is at Liftonic, which is right next door and we are obsessed with Sweetgreen! My children often come to visit and play at the park across the street as well!
What is the inspiration behind #BreakingBarriers, which we see on many a NESH t-shirt? What does the future hold for Breaking Barriers?
Our Fashion Film Breaking Barriers was inspired by all our amazing #neshing women that we have met over the last 6 years. We wanted to honor the diversity of our customers and we will continue marketing platforms around this theme including newsletters and awards.
