DISTRICT PROFILE: Ruth Gruca

Name: Ruth Gruca
Title: Global Fashion Director
What do you do and how did you get here?
I am the Global Fashion Director of MADE c/o WME | IMG. I never imagined myself working in fashion. My sister was always the fashionista in the family (designing for Hood By Air for years and now a designer at Supreme). My focus was always art and tech/music. When I first moved to NYC, I quickly began working with artists that merged fashion and art. I became close friends with the crew at DIS Magazine who introduced me to VFILES. While working at VFILES I launched the VFILES THIRD FLOOR showroom, a “brand incubator” that helps emerging designers find their voice in this industry through wholesaling and PR. My work there caught the eye of my friends at MADE and now here I am, living the dream and curating fashion events all over the world: MADE NEW YORK, MADE LA, MADE BERLIN… Stay tuned!
When you’re in the district, you’re probably slammed with FW prep. If you had 15 minutes between meetings in Meatpacking, how would you spend it?
I would definitely pop into the Whitney to see what’s new. I love that building in general!
The Meatpacking District is at the cross section of fashion and tech as a neighborhood, with many of the top brands locating here. How have you seen fashion and tech play out at MADE, during NYFW over the years and into the future?
Tech is definitely an integral part of MADE – all the way from our digital output to new horizons in garment and stage technology. Most notably, designers like Chromat who are known for merging the latest technology with forward thinking fashion design. We also have an ongoing relationship with Intel who has been essential to the creation of some of our most innovative runway moments. This year we launched MADE BERLIN showcasing our designers Eckhaus Latta and OTTOLINGER. As this event continues to evolve, we plan to have a strong emphasis on Fashion that also belongs in the tech space.
Whats your most memorable moment or experience in Meatpacking?
Attending my first MADE Fashion Week show years ago at MILK!
What can we expect from MADE this season? And what are you most excited for?
This season is going to be next level! Not only do we have an extremely exciting line-up of designers showing at MILK Studios and at The Standard High Line but we are launching our first ever NYC pop-up shop called F.Y.I. @ MADE New York. It will be open Monday, September 12th – Wednesday, September 14th from 12:00 – 8:00 pm each day. We will be selling some items directly off our runway; there will be live DJs, artist activations, food, drinks and more. It’s going to be awesome! Come by!
