Ice cream is always a good idea, but especially on National Ice Cream Day (July 21) in the middle of a hot NYC summer. Even more fitting that the weekend is actually going to be the hottest on record so far for the season. As If you needed another excuse to eat your favorite cold treat, below you’ll find the best spots for ice cream in the neighborhood and tips and tricks for scoops that can’t be missed.
Dasher + Crank Pop up at the Gansevoort Hotel
Miami based ice cream shop Dasher + Crank is set up outside of the Gansevoort Hotel all summer long to give New Yorkers a slice of that Florida sunshine. Flavors include ube, Babka N Cream, Hazelnut Crunch and lemon speculoos.
The Scoop: Go boozy and order a beer float at the hotel bar, The Chester. Each float is made with the perfect craft beer to taste beautifully with its respective ice cream.
Creamline
This “farm to tray” staple in Chelsea Market serves all your favorite American classics sourced from local ingredients. Pick up a class soft serve from Ronnybrook Farms or a milkshake (boozy or non boozy depending if you’re 21+).
The Scoop: There are two things to note here. The first is on National Ice Cream Day Creamline will be serving free soft serve ice cream to anyone who mentions National Ice Cream Day in-store (heck yes). Secondly, Thrillest just named Creamline’s Two Cookies & Cream milkshake the top 5 milkshakes in the city, so there’s that. Might as well go double whammy on the dairy and have both.
Ample Hills
There’s a lot of reasons to love Ample Hills, but one of the main reasons is that all of their mix-ins are made in house, by hand and from scratch. So if you’re looking for local, this is it.
The Scoop: The store here in Meatpacking has a special flavor only served at this location, Floatin’ over the High Line. The flavor creates a nostalgic feeling of strolling down the elevated park with root beer float ice cream, mini marshmallows and chocolate sprinkles.
Seed + Mill
If you have not tried the tahini ice cream at Seed + Mill in Chelsea Market, you are truly missing out on one of life’s greatest pleasures. And no, we’re not being dramatic. Top of the tahini ice cream with halva and fresh milled tahini and take your tastebuds for a sesame filled ride.
The Scoop: On National Ice Cream Day, Seed + Mill is launching a new vegan tahini soft serve that’s cashew based chocolate tahini. Plus they’re offering free ice cream toppings on Sunday the 21st.
Intersect
For a limited time, grab a taste of Japan with the Kakigori pop up at Intersect. Kakigori is a luxury confection that originated in Japan in the 11th century. A delicacy favored by nobles, it was created by shaving ice into fine, smooth flakes, stacking them into delicate layers and covering them with the finest ingredients. Flavors featured are Champagne Brulee and Melon Margarita.
The Scoop: Non-alcoholic versions are served in the Café from 11AM-4PM and alcoholic versions in the Bar from 5PM. Only at Intersect until August 11!
L’ Arte del Gelato
Italians know a thing or two about Gelato and L’Arte del Gelato in Chelsea Market and on the High Line is not to be missed. Straight from Sicily, the artisanal gelato is made in the Italian tradition.
The Scoop: Flavor of the month for July is Cantaloupe Sorbetto, but employees say their favorite is Biscotti di Mamma Rosa.
