How To Make A Monte Cristo Sandwich With Three Owls Market
April 27, 2020
Our friends at Three Owls Market are back with another recipe! They shared with us how to make a Monte Cristo sandwich. An easier, Americanized version of the French Croque Monsieur sandwich, this cheesy, sweet, and savory sammie is a mashup of meat, cheese, and mustard with French toast vibes.
Makes: 2 sandwiches
- 4 slices bread of your choosing
- 2 eggs
- ⅓ cup milk
- 2 tablespoons Dijon or grain mustard
- Mayo (optional)
- 4-6 slices turkey, ham, or prosciutto
- About ½ cup shredded cheese of 4 slices (Cheddar, Swiss, or Gruyere are best but American cheese works in a pinch!)
- Butter, for cooking
- Powdered sugar, for serving (optional)
- Strawberry jam, for serving
In a shallow bowl big enough to hold both sandwiches, whisk together eggs and milk, and set aside. You’ll be dipping the entire sandwich into this later.
Lay all bread slices flat and swipe mustard over all the slices. If you wish, swipe some mayo over the mustard as well. Divide cheese between two of the slices, then top with the meat. Close your 2 sandwiches. Add both to the shallow bowl with the egg mixture, and soak on each side for 1-5 minutes. For standard sliced sandwich bread, 1 minute should be plenty of time. For heartier bread like challah, brioche, or sourdough, you might want to soak closer to 5 minutes.
Melt unsalted butter in a large nonstick pan over medium heat. When butter is foaming, add sandwiches (you should hear a sizzling sound), and cook until golden with melty cheese and meat is warmed through, 2-4 minutes per side.
Slice sandwiches on a diagonal, dust with powdered sugar if you have it, and serve with strawberry jam!
