BUCKYBALL Lights Up Meatpacking
New York is days away from welcoming approximately 1.2 million visitors for the Summer of Soccer. While the matches will be played just across the Hudson, the Meatpacking District is preparing to take its position on the field, transforming its iconic cobblestone streets into a destination for culture, community, and celebration.
If you've wandered through the Meatpacking District lately, you've likely noticed the 18-foot geometric sculpture commanding attention in 14th Street Square (14th Street and Ninth Avenue), and wondered what story it has to tell.
That sculpture is titled BUCKYBALL, the centerpiece of a major public art activation planted in Meatpacking as New York prepares to welcome millions of visitors. Beginning June 10, the installation will transform 14th Street Square into a gathering place for curiosity, connection, and discovery.
Created by acclaimed light artist Leo Villareal and presented in partnership with NALA Projects, BUCKYBALL reflects the Meatpacking District's ongoing commitment to placemaking through art and culture.
New York-based artist Leo Villareal is internationally recognized for transforming public spaces through light. His work includes The Bay Lights in San Francisco, Illuminated River in London, and installations held in the collections of MoMA and the National Gallery of Art.
At first glance, BUCKYBALL may appear to be a striking geometric sculpture rising above 14th Street, but the structure itself is only part of the artwork.
Embedded throughout the sculpture are hundreds of LED lights powered by Villareal's custom software. Inspired by mathematician John Conway's "Game of Life," the installation continuously generates evolving patterns of light, color, and movement. No two viewing experiences are exactly alike. The result is a living artwork that shifts and transforms in real time, inviting visitors to slow down, look closer, and discover something new with each visit.
Join us on Wednesday, June 10 at 8 PM for the official reveal. Whether you're visiting for the Summer of Soccer, exploring the neighborhood, or simply passing through 14th Street Square, BUCKYBALL offers a new lens through which to experience New York City.
This summer The World Plays in Meatpacking! Throughout June and July, enjoy a robust lineup of events and activities including Summer Goals open streets programming watch parties, and more! designed to welcome visitors from around the world.
BUCKYBALL is on view through August 28, 2026.
